What Is an Acknowledgment?

An acknowledgment confirms identity and voluntary signing.

With an acknowledgment, the signer personally appears before the notary and acknowledges that they signed the document willingly. Unlike a jurat, an acknowledgment usually does not require an oath or affirmation.

πŸͺͺ

The signer is identified

The signer must personally appear and provide acceptable identification before the notarization can be completed.

✍️

The signer acknowledges the signature

The signer confirms that they signed the document willingly and understand they are acknowledging their signature.

πŸ“„

The notarial certificate is completed

Once requirements are met, I complete the acknowledgment certificate and apply the official notary seal.

Important: I cannot choose the notarial act for you or tell you whether your document needs an acknowledgment, jurat, oath, or another notarial certificate. Please confirm with the receiving party if you are unsure.

Legal Limits

I cannot choose the notarial wording for you.

As a California Notary Public, I can verify identity, witness eligible signatures when required, complete the notarial certificate, and apply the official notary seal.

I cannot tell you whether your document needs an acknowledgment, jurat, or another notarial act. I also cannot draft documents, explain legal consequences, or provide legal advice.

Helpful tip: If the document came from an attorney, escrow company, bank, agency, employer, or receiving party, ask them to confirm the required notarial wording before the appointment.
Acknowledgment vs. Jurat

Not all notarizations are the same.

Many clients are not sure whether they need an acknowledgment or a jurat. The receiving party should confirm which notarial act is required.

Acknowledgment

Usually confirms that the signer personally appeared, was identified, and acknowledged signing the document willingly. An oath or affirmation is typically not required.

Jurat

Usually requires the signer to sign in front of the notary and swear or affirm that the statements in the document are true.

Need a jurat instead? Visit the Affidavit & Jurat Notary page for sworn statements, affidavits, and oath/affirmation notarizations.
